For version 11, no matter which operating system it is,
1) Choose Typewriter tool and click on the page where you would like to insert text, Format tab will appear at the right side.
2) Click the color button to select a color you want.

If you're running a version prior to V11 on Windows OS, please refer to the following steps.
For version before 11
1) Navigate to COMMENT tab, select Typewriter tool, and click on the page. The current tab will be switched to COMMENT FORMAT tab.
2) Type anything on the page, highlight the text, and select Font Color with “A” shape under the COMMENT FORMAT to pick up a desired color.
Note:

If you are editing a block of existing text, double click on it to make the cursor appear inside the text box, and then highlight the text.

If you want to set the color as new default, please click on the typewriter text then right-click to choose "Set Current Properties as Default".
If you're running a version prior to V11 Mac OS, please select Typewriter text, and click on "Aa" icon on the toolbar, then select the color under "Format" to change color.
Note: If you want to set the color as new default, please click on the typewriter text then right-click to open "Properties" then check "Set Current Properties as Default" in the Properties dialog.

Guys, I went through the painful process of creating an account with an image verification challenge that required me 4 times to get it right just to share this: I needed to go to Google to search for the way to change the color of the Typewriter text just because it is not intuitive. The left panel was simply collapse and I could realized something was there. 15 minutes of my time. Maybe you could rethink your design approach.
